Head Shoe Diva
Shoe Diva Contributor: america

OK, I will admit it, “Hello, my name is America and I am a shoe addict. It’s been 6 weeks since my last shoe purchase…”
I have been dancing tango since 1999. The funny thing is that I don’t think that before tango I had ever spent more than $40 on a pair of shoes (ok, there was ONE pair of hiking boots but does that really count). But since I started tango… I have been on the hunt for the perfect pair of tango shoes. I have bought a lot of shoes in that time. From the early days when I bought ballroom shoes locally, to buying them in Argentina, to replacing my entire shoe collection after my feet increased a size. I still haven’t found the perfect pair, but I have a pretty insane collection of fun shoes and I want to share my experiences with you.

Current stats:

Fattomano: 4 pair (2 retired)
Comme il Faut: 12 pair (eek – I did get whole bunch of these used for a really good price)
Tango Wear: 3 pair (one on the way!)
Traspie: 3 pair (and NO more grrrr)
Tara Tango: 2 pair (1 retired?)
Tango Shoppe: 1 pair
Darcos: 7 pair
Neotango: 2 pair
Jorge Nel: 1 pair (RETIRED)
Ballroom Shoes: 4 pair (all retired)

  1. I have a problem with my slingbacks and, since you have so much experience with different shoes, I’m hoping you’ll know somthing that can help. When I lift my foot, the stiletto stays on the ground and there is a 1/2 inch gap between my foot and the shoe. Needless to say this makes dancing in them very unstable. The ankle strap is fine, it is the strap that connects the ankle strap vertically to the shoe that is too long. These straps are not the thicker, slingbacks I see on your page – they are as thin as the ankle strap. What can I do? Should I have someone cut them and sew them shorter? Should I atatch another strap vertically from the bottom of the shoe over the top of my arch? They are Comme Il Fauts and I don’t want to ruin them :( when I tried them on they “stuck” to my feet perfectly but once I start dancing they unstick themselves.

  2. Just found your site through Modern Tanguera’s post.

I am partial to Tara Tango shoes. I bought my first pair of red Malena’s in 2000, and they are still going strong. I have a black suede pair of Malena’s from last year that felt perfect from the first step on the dance floor.

Tango shoe stores in BsAs continue to pop up with the steady demand by foreigners. The latest one is http://www.taconeandoshoes.com.ar in case you haven’t seen them.
